SUMMARY OF THE GROUP AREAS ACT, 1950

The Group Areas Act is largely based on the principles of the existing legislation, but goes beyond those principles in some respects. Firstly, it extends the principle of exclusive racial areas so as to provide for exclusively European areas. All racial groups are now dealt with on the same principle. Secondly, the principle of controlling changes in the racial character of ownership and occupation of land and premises is extended to all defined racial groups throughout the country.
